More than evolutionary ‘shortcuts’
Many thousands of years ago, chows served as ancient Chinese palace security dogs, and they still exhibit sentry-like behavior.
“Great Pyrenees” were bred and used as herd guardians for centuries. Responsible for chasing off predators like bears and wolves, they are still used by farmers for that purpose. Even when Great Pyrenees are raised as household pets, they will also remain instinctively protective.
Dogs bred for hunting (e.g., various breeds of retrievers) retain natural predatory and athletic instincts. Shepherd and Collie breeds are instinctively good at herding other animals...
