Dogs willingly accept their subordinate role as extended members of their new human "pack" (typically a single family in modern American society). 

Instinctively some dogs may assert themselves as pack leaders. This is the source of much of the common dog behavior problems. 

Leading researchers in the field, assert that the basic intelligence of a typical dog is equivalent to that of a human infant (e.g. in language recognition, problem-solving, and in following verbal & nonverbal directions); but, canine social and emotional intelligence is more like that of a human teenager...
