Humans and Canines:

More than evolutionary ‘shortcuts’

The archaeological record about earliest dogs is inconclusive. One finding locates early dogs in Goyet Cave, Belgium, between 15-20 thousand years ago.

Beyond differentiation from wolves,  early canine domestication was instrumental to man’s progression from hunter gatherer to animal herder. Dog domestication played an important role in the concurrent formation of more stationary and more stable human societies.

Canine domestication, facilitated human hearding ability. Reducing certain anatomical breathing requirements needed in running while herding, has additionally been postulated as instrumental to the “descent of the larynx” in our early human ancestors.

The larynx is a key anatomic component in the early formation of the complex sounds that are necessary for developing more effective oral language. Human domestication of dog may have thus provided us one more and vital evolutionary, linguistic advantage.(more)
