Humans and Canines:
More than evolutionary ‘shortcuts’
Before domesticating dogs, Canis familiaris, humans began domesticating gray wolves, some 20-30 thousand years ago, in Europe. Spanning thousands of years, human domestication of wild canines was a slow process, during which humans asserted themselves, becoming the “dominant pack leaders.”
Without needing to develop a greater sense of smell or superior hearing, humans were thus able to incorporate those additional hunting skills in a close alliance with their domesticated dogs.
Understanding how much of the canine to human behavior, in dogs, may be genetically predetermined, versus learned interaction (i.e.: innate, rather than reshaped by experience.) -- is the same, human developmental question that has perplexed our psychologists, sociologists, and philosophers for centuries...
